You will need openbox. You can install it on Debian using command:

# apt-get install openbox

If you have it, you can than run following command as root on any distribution with systemd:

# systemd-run --property PAMName=login \
              --property User=some-user \
              --property StandardInput=tty \
              --property TTYPath=/dev/tty8 \
              sh -c 'chvt 8 && startx /usr/bin/openbox -- :1'

You can modify:

  • some-user with desired username,
  • TTYPath=/dev/tty8 and chvt 8 with different VT number,
  • /usr/bin/openbox to run something other than openbox
  • :1 to assign different display number
